2008 TAX LEGISLATION - OTHER CURRENT TAX DEVELOPMENTS
PREPARER PENALTIES / CIRCULAR 230

Dear Practitioner:

The purpose of this letter is to announce our 2008 Spring Program! All of our seminars are designed to qualify for CPE credit under rules promulgated by the New England and New Jersey State Boards of Public Accountancy, and the Office of Professional Responsibility in Washington, D.C. (tax seminars only). All of our 1-day seminars run from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (8:30 a.m. for registration, coffee, and danish), are priced at $165 each, and are designed to help you better service your best closely-held business and individual clients. As a special inducement to register with us this Spring, you can obtain 24 or 40 hours of CPE credit by registering for any three 1-day seminars for only $420 or for any five 1-day seminars for only $660, respectively. Please note that any grouping of 3 or 5 registrants qualifies for the reduced fees. Also, please note that Accounting and Financial Reporting (GAAP) for Not-For-Profit Organizations qualifies toward the 24 hour requirement for Yellow Book. If you register for the 2008 FASB / SAS Update, please add $20 to your registration fee to cover the extra cost of the extensive FASB manual. If you register for Estate & Distribution Planning for Retirement Benefits, please add $24 to your registration fee to cover the extra cost of the extensive manual.

Please note that the full day seminar on Preparer Penalties/ Circular 230 to be presented by Lucien Gauthier, Esq., CPA on 5/28 in W. Springfield, 5/29 in Marlboro, and 6/5 in Hyannis and by Edward DeFranceschi, Esq. on 6/13 in Braintree, 6/18 in Wakefield, and 6/25 in Waltham has been revised to include a discussion of preparer penalties and Circular 230. As you may know, MA now requires 4 hours of instruction on professional ethics for licenses expiring on or after 06/30/07; ME, NH, and, more recently, CT each require 4 hours of instruction on professional ethics every 3 years; and RI requires not less than 6 hours of instruction on professional ethics for the three-year reporting period beginning 01/01/08 and ending 12/31/10. Enrolled agents are required to take a minimum of 2 hours on professional ethics during each year of their 3 year enrollment cycle. The Vermont accountancy statute and rules differ significantly from those of the other New England states.

This Spring, we are offering a one-half day seminar entitled Accounting Ethics which is intended to qualify for 4 credit hours of instruction on Ethics even under the Vermont accountancy statute and rules and is priced at $132. This special pricing can be combined with the special pricing that applies to our 1-day seminars. This seminar received excellent reviews in the Fall!

The new rules in the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 on bonus depreciation and increased section 179 expensing will be covered in detail in our seminar entitled Section 179/Depreciation/Autos.
